Howell Michigan Dentist’s Role in Detecting HPV
Do you get regular checkups at the dentist office?
Have you ever been screened for oral cancer?
Does oral cancer run in your family?
Oral cancer doesn’t have to run in your family in order to contact the HPV disease, also known as Human Papilloma Virus. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, “transmission of the virus occurs when these areas come into contact with a virus, allowing it to transfer between epithelial cells.” HPV usually goes away on its own within two years, never causing any health concerns. However, in some cases, symptoms may not show up until years later.
Oral Cancer Symptoms
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, if you suffer from any of the following symptoms visit your dentist or other health care professional immediately to help diagnose the problem, including:
- An ulcer or sore that does not heal within 2-3 weeks
- Difficult or painful swallowing
- Pain when chewing
- A persistent sore throat or hoarse voice
- A swelling or lump in the mouth
- A painless lump felt on the outside of the neck, which has been there for at least two weeks.
- A numb feeling in the mouth or lips
- Constant coughing
- An ear ache on one side that persists for more than a few days
